Whale Bay Charters, 2007 Itinerary
This summer we are offering 7 trips in the magnificent Icy Strait area.
This is Marine Mammal viewing and photography at its very best!  Our boat's course will include Humpback whale feeding grounds. The huge (40 ton) mothers and their 4 month old calves arrive back in Icy Strait in early June. The energetic calves and their lean moms are quite hungry after their 3000 mile journey from Hawaii. Last summer 14 new calves were seen in the Glacier Bay/Icy Strait area.

We will pass by rocky islands overcrowded with Stellar Sea Lions piled on top of each other. It is always quite a scene, with the large 1500 lb. bulls "beachmasters" proudly enthroned, while the juveniles raucously joust and slide into the sea foam. Now and then, a large brown bear-like head with big, black eyes surfaces with a firm bite on a struggling salmon.

The Sea Otters are making a strong come back from near extinction. We will enjoy several communities of 30 or more of these comical characters. Often the mothers are seen carrying their pups on their bellies. Others float about on their backs, busily crunching on a crab or braking open a clam with their favorite rock.

Our journey will also bring us together with: Dall porpoise, the world's fastest marine mammal, Harbor porpoise, nesting bald Eagles, Horned and Crested Puffins and a variety of other sea birds. Ashore experiences include marine rich tide pools, picturesque beaches, the maritime forest and a small coastal community.

Add, to all this sensory overload, the joy of eating delicious Alaskan Seafood. Halibut, several species of Salmon, cod, rock fish, Dungeness crab, and Alaskan shrimp. Yummmm!!! These trips alternately begin and end in Gustavus/Glacier Bay and Hoonah, Alaska. Check our web for airline information. Flights into Gustavus are on Alaska Airlines,www.alaskaair.com and Air Excursion.www.airex.com
Flights into Hoonah are with LAB Air and Wings of Alaska. www.labflying.com or www.wiingsofalaska.com
